If slain New Orleans Police officer Daryle Holloway's persona could be summed in one word, that word would be humble. Or at least that's what Buddy Lewis, Holloway's Eastern New Orleans neighbor, thinks.
"He always spoke," said Lewis, 42. And "he would come out every now and then just check around the neighborhood."
Holloway, 46, was driving handcuffed prisoner Travis Boys to central lockup early Saturday when Boys twisted out of his bindings, somehow got through the vehicle's partition, and fatally shot Holloway with a gun. The gun was not Holloway's, police said, and it's not clear how Boys, 33, obtained it.
For Lewis, 42, news of Holloway's death was a shock. Lewis lives a few doors down from Holloway's home, and said he found out about Holloway's death shortly after he was shot this morning.
"I'm just still in disbelief. Because I know, he's either going to pass in that truck, or he's going to be leaving his house," he said.
Holloway was a quiet force in neighborhood. His presence helped combat area crime, Lewis said. To Lewis' knowledge, Holloway moved in the area shortly after Hurricane Katrina, and mostly kept to himself.
But Holloway was polite and friendly, Lewis said.
"Hopefully they catch this guy," he added, speaking of Boys, who is still at large. "We need the streets to step up. It's hard, because no one wants to do it."
Still, "He needs to be off the streets."

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -
The man accused of killing NOPD Officer Daryle Holloway is in police custody.
According to NOPD, officers arrested 33-year-old Travis Boys in the 9th Ward after a nearly 24-hour manhunt.
Boys is now in Central Lock Up after being taken to LSU Interim Hospital to be treated for dehydration.
"I could not be more proud of the work they're doing right now," Harrison said of the officers from several agencies who worked to capture Boys. "Even though they were grieving the loss of a fellow officer, they never gave up and they continued to serve their community.”
The Gretna Police Department, Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, Westwego Police Department, St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office, Housing Authority of New Orleans Police, FBI, ATF, U.S. Marshals Service, Louisiana State Police and Crimestoppers of Greater New Orleans all aided in the investigation.
Boys is accused of killing Officer Daryle Holloway, a 22-year NOPD veteran, while being transported in his police unit.
Police arrested Boys on Friday, June 19 for aggravated assault. He was accused of firing a .38 caliber weapon at a woman. Once he was arrested officers took him to the 5th District Station where he was frisked for weapons. Boys was then turned over to Holloway to be taken to Orleans Parish Prison.
On the way to OPP, NOPD Chief Michael Harrison said Boys was handcuffed with his hands behind his back in the backseat of the police cruiser, but somehow got his hands out from behind his back. He then made his way through an opening in the cage that separates the front and back seats of police car and shot Holloway, causing the cruiser to crash into a utility pole.
During the investigation, police recovered two weapons from the scene of the crime. A .38 caliber revolver believed to be used in the aggravated assault police initially arrested Boys for and a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson believed to be the weapon Boys used to Kill Holloway. Police are still unsure on how Boys obtained two weapons while in police custody.
During the investigation on Saturday, June 20, police tracked Boys down in a gray Dodge truck that had been reported stolen. They chased him into the St. Roch neighborhood where he crashed the truck into a house and fled on foot. Police set a perimeter in the area and spent most of Saturday evening searching homes in the neighborhood, but Boys was not found.
The next day, June 21, officers located Boys inside a convenience store near St. Claude and Forstall. Boys then boarded an RTA bus and was arrested after a brief chase. Police said he still had broken handcuffs on his wrists.
Boys now faces one charge of First Degree Murder, Aggravated Escape and Illegal Possession of a Firearm. Boys will also face charges for the aggravated Assault he was initially arrested for.
Mayor Mitch Landrieu said that Holloway did great work in his 22-years of service in the New Orleans community and that this loss serves as a reminder of the dangerous work law enforcement do every day.
“When someone kills a police officer in the line of duty, it is an attack on the entire community, personally and as a city,” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. “It is a reminder of the sacrifices our police officers make when we hire them to protect and serve us. Officer Holloway did tremendous work as a police officer and he was doing that yesterday when his life was taken."
